About the Department

Philosophy” comes from Greek words Philos and Sophia which means “love of wisdom.” Philosophy uses the tools of logic and reason to analyze the ways in which humans experience the world. Students who learn philosophy get so many benefits from doing so. The tools taught by philosophy are of great use in further education and in employment. The most important reason to study philosophy is that it has enormous and enduring interest. In this department, students can learn how to ask the questions well and how we might begin to develop responses. Without philosophy, you wouldn’t be asking this question. Philosophy has not only emphasized the importance of questions, but has added some meaning to life. Philosophers not only raise questions, but also present suggestions and answers to those questions. Both philosophy and philosophers have made a plethora of contributions to society. Philosophy can develop our mind and transform ourselves to a new personality. The way people look the society is very important for our life. Philosophy looks our life in a different way so that people can enjoy the criticism as a complement. In the department of Philosophy, there are three faculties.Two of them are Assistant Professors and the rest of them is Part time teacher. This department provides both Honours and General courses. We have one enriched departmental Library and one computer with WiFi connection. This department has a healthy academic atmosphere as well as a good academic result

The basic criteria for any job or career opportunity in the present day world is obtaining a degree in Bachelor of Arts. School education gives a student the power to soar above those who are uneducated and illiterate. Education in a college on the other hand gives the students an edge to soar above those who are equipped with only school education and to touch the skies. Competing for any kind of job either in a Government sector or private sector requires a basic qualification which is B.A degree. By obtaining this degree a person can contribute not only towards the welfare of his family but also to the society in general. Program specific outcome Once a child asked his mother “Why are we so poor in the world?” Mother replied, “If we are rich we cannot serve God, we can just serve wealth. Therefore, we are so poor to love and to serve God”. This is philosophy which is a realization of everything in a different way. People who learnt philosophy can gain a special realization power. He/she also can develop his/her soul. Actually philosophy helps people to develop their personality in a sensitive ground. Philosophy means love of wisdom. So, if you study philosophy you will be enriched by lots of knowledge. It also teaches how to apply knowledge into our day to day life. Actually it teaches the skills to perform knowledge application. Philosophy teaches us the methodology to perform research work. Research means to discover a new thought or to look a matter in a different view point. Philosophy helps us to perform good research. People have a doubt about a job factor after studying philosophy. They can be assured that after studying philosophy they can attend success in their life by getting job in different aspects. People can get job in higher education by studying philosophy. They can join any teaching profession in school, college and university by studying philosophy. People can be a good teacher, a good administrator by studying philosophy. They also can do any job by his own. Philosophy not only helps people to get a job, it also helps them to be a good person in life. If we study other subjects like Mathematics, Physics, History, Geography, Music , we can be specialized in a particular aspect. But if we study philosophy we can be specialized in different aspects. It is a mother subject of all subjects. Therefore, when people get PHD degree in Bengali or Physics, they will be recognized as a Doctor of Philosophy,not as a Doctor of Bengali or as a Doctor of Physics. Philosophers and their great Philosophy always build up our nation.All of us aware about the great saint Swami Vivekananda,who is also a pupil of Philosophy.Our country had achieved a great success in the world by Swamiji’s philosophical thoughts.There are so many philosophers like D.L.Roy, Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore, B.K. Lal who enriched our country, our nation by their great philosophical thoughts.Our ex-President Dr.A.P.J.AbdulKalam who also known as a great philosopher, enriched the mankind with his great knowledge ,innovative thoughts and his great personality.

Course outcome

I.History of Western Philosophy Western philosophical thinking began in ancient Greece nearly 3000 years ago and it has since developed in extremely diverse and interesting directions. Construction of conceptual structures and world views is as important in it as in Indian Philosophy. The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with its broad outlines. II. Outlines of Indian Philosophy Indian Philosophy originated more than 5000 years ago and developed in circumstances considerably different from those of the West and therefore it has developed very many concepts peculiar to itself. Hence, the concerns and focus of Philosophical debates in Classical India also happen to be different.

III.Western Logic The system of Logic formulated by Aristotle nearly 25 centuries ago remained without any very substantial changes until modern symbolic logic started developing in the early part of the 20th Century. This paper aims at introducing the students to the basic elements of Western logic in a panoramic way.

IV. Indian Logic The nature of Logic has been considerably different in the Indian Philosophical systems. Very close connection between Logic and Metaphysics, it is quite important in Indian logic to accept or not to accept certain forms of reasoning. This course aims at highlighting some of the distinctive aspects of Indian logic.

V. Western Ethics The chief concerns and presuppositions of Western Ethics are considerably different from those of Indian Ethics. This course is meant to introduce the student to the main types of ethical theories in the West.

VI.Indian Ethics In Indian thought all ethical thinking has always been firmly rooted in philosophy and religion. This part of the paper aims at introducing the students to the distinctive elements of Indian thinking on Ethics.

VII. Social and political philosophy This paper aims at introducing the students to the various aspects of social and political philosophical thoughts and ideas.

VII. Philosophy of mind This course is designed to make the students aware of the philosophical problems that attach to the concept of the mental in relation to the physical. VIII Philosophy of Language- Indian and Western This paper aims to providing a brief overview of the chief elements of the Indian Philosophy of language like the problem of meaning, conditions for knowing sentence meaning, the metaphysical basis of language etc.

IX Western Epistemology and Metaphysics The course aims to providing a bird’s eye view of the general features and problems of Western Epistemology. There is also a close relationship between science and metaphysics in the West. Western metaphysics aims at familiarizing the students with the broad outlines of the chief ideas, issues and debates in Western Metaphysics.

X Modern Indian Thinkers Modern Indian thought differs in many ways from classical Indian thought. The course aims at introducing the students to the rich fare of modern Indian thought in a panoramic way.
